'll break down some of the electoral possibilities, which is narrowing for mitt romney and david shuster is in denver as well. the debate will start in about 57 minutes. i'm already buzzing. i love these things. >> jennifer: let's go! let's go! >> cenk: and we'll have analysis afterwards as well. vice president gore let me start with you. it looks like mitt romney is significantly down in the important swing states. does your strategy shift now and if so how? >> i think he has to be aggressive, without seeming to be aggressive and i think it's a tricky act for him to pull off. i think that his supporters realize that he is probably behind as the polls indicate and that he needs to really change some minds tonight. i think in some way there's more pressure on president obama simply because the polls indicate and most people expect that he will win the debate and that's a tough position to be in. but at the same time because governor romney has to do so much more -- he has to change the course of this race tonight, and that puts an enormous amount of pressure on him. so

. i think he let us all down. i hate to say it. look romney came to play. i think -- romney came to play and president obama stayed home. listen. i looked at it not just as an obama supporter but as somebody who loves debate and has made a living out of debating. and started out -- look, in -- i was on the debate team in high school. i the debate team -- in delaware. i was on the debate team at niagara university. when i went to college. i coached debate. my father judged high school in philadelphia. i debated on crossfire on the spin room, on msnbc. i've debated on the road with bob novack ay and bill crystal and mary madeline and you name them. armstrong williams. alan keys, i can't remember all of the conservatives i've been on the road with. so debate is sort of my thing. i'm sorry to say it, on points and on style, mitt romney won last debate. he came to play. obama did not. and it's not that -- i don't know what it w the president decided he wasn't going to get down and dirty but he just let mitt rom

bounces. it is already coming back down -- the polls were moving in romney's direction a few days before the debate kind of that natural, kind of movement of polls post convention and this certainly accelerated it. so the jobs numbers probably helped slow the obama fall but now we move into another week people will be talking about biden, and then a couple of more with romney and obama. >> bill: yeah, i was surprised and impressed, i guess that obama proved -- so he didn't have a good night, we all know that, but i thought he bounced back pretty quickly the next day. he has been having a lot of fun with the big bird line. and it showed a lot of resilience, i thought, and as you point out the job numbers came on friday which gave him another little boost, cutting the impact of any romney bounce. >> yeah he has an incredible amount of fire and energy when it is his back up against the wall. >> bill: yeah. >> it's almost like he puts himself in positions like that so that he can get excited about politics again. he obviously didn't want to be on that stage, wednesda

to move -- >> romney: i have to respond. my experience as a governor if i lay down a piece of legislation and say my way or the highway, i don't get it done. when ronald reagan ran for office he laid out the principles that he was going to foster, lower tax rates, broaden the base. you have said the same thing. those are my principles i'm going to work together with congress to say okay what are the various ways we could bring down deductions for instance. one way would be to have a single number, maybe can have deductions up of that amount and then that number disappears for higher-income people. one could follow simpson boles. there are all kinds of ways to achieve the objective i have. and with regards to health care you had remarkable de25i8s with regards to my preexisting condition plan. i do have a plan that deals with people with preexisting conditions, that's part of my health care plan. and what we did in massachusetts was a model state by state. the federal government taking over health care for the entire nation is not the course for america to have a strong

-- mitt romney must be worried about that. if jim lehrer decides to drill down on what by mitt romney's own characterization is an etch-a-sketch campaign, they could breed significant problems for him. >> it is not an easy job moderating debates under that format. interesting to see. they could talk about immigration because of the border agent shot today. there are a lot of different things that both candidates have to prepare for. >> eliot: one thing i would say is these are two unbelievably smart individuals. as you said, they both know the substantive areas they will be discussing. i think emotion will be more important than the substantive content. david, thank you. >> good luck. >> eliot: i'll see you. i might need you in my corner. that's "viewpoint" for tonight. in one hour, it is the war of the words. i'll be debating glenn beck here in denver. get the details on facebook facebook.com/current. i'll see you tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. for our coverage of the presidential
